This is a Community Capital Fund (CCF) -approved and -supported project that was awarded a CCF Neighborhood Opportunity Grant because of the impact it will have in building neighborhood capacity and revitalizing our community. CCF has awarded the Westside Housing Organization a total of $20,000 for the Nottingham Urban Farm Expansion project where 75% of the award ($15,000) is provided as seed funding for the crowdfunding campaign. It’s up to supporters like you to contribute 10% ($2,000) so they can receive the 15% match and bonus (or $3,000) from CCF. Thank you for supporting this impactful project!
Locally grown produce should be accessible to everyone. It should not depend on income, access to green space, or gardening talent. The Nottingham Gardens Urban Farm Express wants to make locally grown produce accessible and affordable for the Westside!
HOW IT BEGAN
The Nottingham Urban Farm Express is based out of the low-income Nottingham Apartments, located at 1748 Washington, Kansas City, MO 64108. The Nottingham Apartments are managed by Westside Housing Organization. The garden was a resident-driven initiative that started in 2012. Westside Housing was able to connect the residents with resources from Kansas City Missouri’s Health Department to build the first set of raised beds. After a successful harvest that fall, the Nottingham gardeners knew they wanted to go bigger, and they wanted to create an innovative way to share their produce with the neighborhood.
OUR PROJECT PLANS
In fall 2014 Community Capital Fund awarded the Nottingham Urban Farm Express a grant to do just that. The award will allow for 40 raised beds to be built, along with lot improvements like a mulch road, water totes, and an outdoor kitchen to be used for cooking and canning demonstrations. As the garden gets growing, produce boxes from the garden will be sold on an income-based scale to the families on the surrounding blocks.
WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL
The Nottingham Urban Farm Express is a different and innovative way to get fresh, hyper-local, organic produce onto the plates of working families. It will be a hybrid community garden, farm stand, and community-supported agriculture operation (CSA). The Nottingham Urban Farm Express is neighbors growing good food for neighbors. It does not get any more locally sourced than this!
We have already returned a vacant, trash strewn, and unsafe strip of vacant land to productive use. We are building community by giving the residents of these blocks a shared amenity, but we still have more to do!
